linklings, the Jets strike back edition
NFL History of the New York Jets (2pc)
It’s time for the Jets to win their Super Bowl. To crush the dreams of Beantown like George Mitchell crushed the Rocket’s hopes for the Hall of Fame. I decline to accept the end of the Jets. It is easy enough to say that the Jets are worthwhile because they will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of the Jets’ puny yet inexhaustible team hammering away at the Patriots, forever. Money and Security: Fear of the Future ∞ Get Rich Slowly
- Plonkee had a very well written guest post on Get Rich Slowly. I have the same feeling where I fear my finances… it’s something I think a lot of people have to overcome.
LifeEdit.net: How to Motivate Change in Your Life
- Here’s an amusing list of ways to kick start change with an ‘animal’ theme. Heading to the watering hole is always a good idea, if you ask me.
The Bing Blog Is Wall Street good for the country? «
- If you don’t read the Bing Blog, you should. Who knows who he is – he seems like some mid-level executive for a fairly large company, but his takes on American corporate life are eerie. This post is terrific, and asks a question we should all ask… is Wall Street actually GOOD for the country? My vote: no.
Fabulously Broke in the City: Live in France: Less work, more pay!
- French people eat pizza and don’t like to work. Who knew? An amusing little take on la vie en francais.
Fecundity: I have always relied on the kindness of strangers
- Fecundity’s post is touching, and completely appropriate for the holiday season. You read stories like this and end up being forced to admit that people can be kind for no apparent reason, despite everything.
How Much Does a Nintendo Wii Cost? | Cash Money Life
- A Wii is a bad investment. Period. As is an iPhone, an expensive dinner, etc. Don’t try to pretend it provides hours of entertainment, relaxes you, etc. so it’s “worth it.” It’s not worth it by any measure. It’s a luxury item, and fine, we all need luxury items. Just don’t kid yourself into thinking it’s a “good deal.”
The end of work as we know it » Brazen Careerist by Penelope Trunk
- I’m not sure I foresee the “end of work” happening for everyone, but in terms of what I hear at work in terms of what people WANT, Penelope is dead on. The question will be whether people push for it. I see a lot of 20-somethings who should be pushing for flex time, etc. who are willing to settle in order to purchase a Wii or an iPhone, which negates her idea. Let’s hope the kids raise a ruckus and demand some change, eh?
Credit Card Currency Transaction Fee Settlement | Cash Money Life
- Second mention of Cash Money Life in this roundup…here’s a good question: would you do no work for $25, or a lot of work for a payout that could fall anywhere from $25 to ???? That’s what the class action lawsuit that was brought on behalf of people who used credit cards for foreign currency transactions are being asked. Check out Cash Money Life’s analysis of the situation.

Steve, I don’t for a minute think it’s an investment!
But, as far as calculating how much it costs, some people would get carried away and say the opportunity cost of owning a Wii is well over $1,000,000! (It’s true, I linked to an example in the bottom of my article).
Oh, and thanks for the link, by the way.
Oh, I know you don’t think it’s an investment. Other people seem to think a Wii is an “investment” in entertainment, though.
“that of the Jets’ puny yet inexhaustible team hammering away at the Patriots, forever” – sounds dirty, but good luck with that happening…:-)
It is time for the Jets to lose by 100 points
I’m trying to think of a subject I care less about that Nintendo Wiis and I’m failing. But the topic is all over my feed reader. Roll on the end of Xmas.
Oh, and you forgot the best Wii argument Steve – that it provides exercise!
I predict that the Jets will do far, far better than Vegas predicts. I’m not predicting a win, but I am predicting that a team one year removed from the playoffs will not fold. I am also predicting that Guinness416 will not buy a Wii for Christmas…
There’s a lot of hype behind the revenge of this game. Perhaps the Vegas line is inflated now that I think about it. I think Vegas is upset about losing the first 11 games by having spreads too low while Belichick was (and still is) hell-bent on blowing out everyone.
Ironically, if the Jets win, it might help the Patriots score a better draft pick with the 49ers next year. That might be a great consolation prize.
I just wanted to state for the record that I hate the Wii! I’ve played it several times and refuse to count it as exercise! Just because you move your arms a little doesn’t mean you’re working out!!! I’m over the Wii!
Last year Hubby wanted a Wii for Christmas. I couldn’t find one, so I got him a $400 gift certificate to Best Buy instead. He used it in February and got his Wii for regular retail price, along with an extra controller and two games. I suggest anyone who’s looking for one do the same rather than paying through the nose for it. Patience is a virtue, people. Unless you’re currently selling one on eBay; then you want the impatient masses banging on your auction door.
Thanks for the link, Steve.
Oh, and I’ll also go in on the bet that Guinness won’t be buying a Wii this Christmas. It was a subtle vibe, but I picked up on it.
What happened to the Jets? And don’t say it was close – close only matters in horseshoes…and vegas, if you were betting.
Well, it was close if you figure in a 23 point spread. It certainly wasn’t the blowout everyone expected… that having been said, a disappointing game to say the least. The Pats should be worried that the Jets played so poorly yet stayed so close. Then again, 16-0 looks very, very doable now.
