• Nice post, I'm actually guilty with question no. 7. Will buying this stuff hurt the environment more than it will help me? I don't really ask myself that but now, I think I should and be a responsible citizen. thank you for the reminder.
  • It's a great list to be remember. i think we have to keep this list in mind while go for a purchase. You have explained a stuff very effectively.
  • Great article. If we could just stop and think before we buy we would save a lot of money. Everyone should carry this list with them.

    ...another question to the list:

'How much care or maintenance would the new stuff require ? '

Almost everything you can own requires some kind of labor to maintain it -- from simple cleaning of clothes... to heavy servicing of automobiles and houses.

The more you own ... the more you have to take care of ...
{or pay somebody else to do it}.

I especially like number 4...we replace stuff that still works with a 'newer' version...why? #8 about quality is good also..we have gotten burned more than once by getting the cheapest to learn that it was useless. Great post!
  • A frugal friend showed me his trick: even if it's something he's been planning to buy and needs, when he goes into the store, he picks up the item, inspects it, thinks about it, and then PUTS IT BACK on the shelf and goes on about the rest of his shopping. If he still thinks it's a good buy after some time passes, then he goes back to the item and decides whether to get it.

It's amazing how much stuff he doesn't buy with this maneuver.

My husband has ADHD, so he has to combat impulsivity whenever purchases are involved. After about three years with me, though, he has finally started asking some of these questions.

I should note that his often include "Can we get this cheaper somewhere else?" (which I tell him is sexy!) and "Will Abby kill me if I get this without talking to her first?" (Hey, laugh if you want: It's kept him alive!)
