I wonder if all this moving down will result in a great shift of people worldwide. For example someone who might barely be able to make it in the US may live quite well in Indonesia or the Phillipines.

I am sure there will be restrictions such as visas and what not, but I strongly suspect that many small businesses from all over are going to do some major moving around.

You have a VERY solid point here. As much fun as it is to blame Wall Street completely and for me to finger-wag at the Orange County plastic-people out here...they're the ones who put money into the businesses that employ lower middle class folks.

plonkee also raised a great point. One that I hadn't really considered.

In our lower-income neighborhood, we're starting to see more eviction notices pasted up on doors (they put them on the building door, vs. apartment door). I've noticed a number of closed small businesses, restaurants, etc which were open a few months back, I suppose their employees don't have anywhere to go now. More office buildings with "for lease" or "space available" signs too.

Good points, but how do you propose we stop the trickle-down? For the nannies, cleaners, and restaurateurs to earn money, someone has to be earning and willing to spend a sufficient amount to afford to pay them.

Yes, it will probably affect those at the bottom of the chain more than those at the top, such is the way of life.

Over here, I'm concerned that the problems with housing and repossessions will mean that more people become homeless - as those at the bottom end up shuffled off the housing ladder as we all move down. We already have a big enough problem with housing as it is.
