happy independence day!

For the Americans out there, enjoy Independence Day! I spread my fair share of gloom and doom about ye olde Union, but it’s still the only functional democracy in North America. Except for Canada. And except for the last 16 years, we’ve all managed to pull together as a country to solve the big problems.

But today’s not just about grills and beers, although in a way it should be. Never has a nation had so many citizens so prosperous and so safe for so long. There are a lot of problems with the US - a LOT - but it’s still one of the top name brands out there and the only thing to prevent us from greatness is ourselves. I said that in 2004, too, but I’ll start saying it again because apparently it didn’t sink in last time.

Enjoy the holiday! And long after the warm fuzzies have worn off from July 4th, remember that you only owe one thing to repay the good times you have today - vote in November.

I can't agree with you more. Seriously folks, VOTE. I'm a firm believer in the old adage "If you didn't vote, you can't gripe"... or something like that :)

Thanks for the reminder. We all need it once in a while.

It's the major summer holiday, and it's raining. I blame the government for not doing something about it. I'm clearly owed another holiday in recompense. It's really the fault of the White House, which once again demonstrates its inattention to the needs of the average citizen in its zeal to please the oil industry and other special interests. You can bet that the next President will never let it rain on Independence Day.

(note that my tongue is stuck firmly in my cheek)

For the record, the US isn't a democracy, we're a republic. If we were a democracy, we would have to vote on every single bill brought before Congress.

A democracy is two wolves and one sheep deciding what's for dinner...and no one votes "present" 130 times.

Aren't there only 2 countries in North America? Canada and the US...

Mexico is Central America, and the rest are South.......

So you could say that we are 100% democratic republic in this continent.

@Momma: Amen, amen.
@Curmudgeon: The next President will actually cure all what done ails us, of that I am sure. And count me firmly in the camp that believes that either man in the running will spectacularly fail to address the most pressing needs of our nation within the next four years. Sigh.
@Ron: Well, yes, true, I am just using the convenient shorthand that you hear on the news and in the papers so frequently. We're a democracy at least in the sense that we've hijacked the word democracy, no?
@Geography: I was making a joke. I know Canada's a parliamentary democracy, so it was just a feeble attempt at humor on my part to say that there was one democracy in the North American continent.
