personal finance, wealthbuilding and the journey to financial freedom

The winter weather has finally arrived in the northeast - I had to wear a coat in the morning yesterday.  The football and baseball seasons are going terribly if you’re a New Yorker, and I don’t hold out much hope that the Knicks are going to salvage 2007 for Gotham sports.   Despite all that, my rubber band therapy is keeping me off the ledge.

Only two links today:

Speak out!: The Financial Blogger just returned to work from paternity leave (not working in America, is he?) and has a new perspective on office complaining. I am trying very hard these days not to be a complainer myself. (@ The Financial Blogger)

Quality of Life is More Important Than Dollars: Would you be willing to take a $20,000 pay cut to be happier? I think most people would have a quick and strong reaction to that question. Many of us might like to think this was true but our actions don’t match our words. This is a good thought exercise for anyone - read the article and think what you would do in this case. Today’s article from the Brip Blap archives:  the appropriately named Brip Blap post.  A brief look at the origins of a weird blog name.

  1. Thanks for the mention. :)

Interesting story on the name “Brip Blap.” I would share my childhood nicknames, but there’s a rumor out there that everything on the internet is permanent. So I’d better not! ;)

BripBlap: Your rubberband therapy may work but it is negative conditioning. A professional occupational therapist colleague of mine suggests the following positive condtioning. First, think about all your most contented and peaceful moments–not events–but snapshot moments. Pick one that is a mental “Kodak moment.” (Mine, in case you are interested) is sitting at night in my family room. The fire is flickering, it’s cold outside but toasty by the fire. I’m chatting lazily with my husband and sipping on Grand Marnier. This is my idea of the perfect moment!) Then start doing this as often as you can: very lightly tap the area of your forehead between your eyebrows with one finger (I use my ring finger to make sure it is a light tap) while visualizing your moment. Keep your eyes closed, of course. Do this often to make your mind correlate the tapping with the visualized peaceful moment. Eventually, when feeling stressed, you will be able to close your eyes, tap between your eyebrows just two or three times and the peaceful moment will pop up and your stress will melt away. It sounds goofy, but it really works!
